GUWAHATI: The All Assam Government NPS (National Pension System) Employees' Association has extended its support to the National Old Pension Restoration United Front (NOPRUF)'s call for a nation-wide protest demonstration as 'Black Day' on February 1 to press its demand for restoration of the old pension scheme.

The employees' association's president Achyutananda Hazarika stated on Friday that they have been carrying out various programmes over the last three-four years to demand continuance of all benefits provided in the old pension scheme.

He said that they would consequently participate in the agitational programme of one-hour's cease-work announced by the NOPRUF) on February 1. The association's members would wear black badges and cease work in their respective offices from noon till 1pm on that day.

Hazarika said that they have been so far abstained from repeated protest programmes over the issue in view of assurances given by the Government, as also to avoid causing inconvenience to the public.

He termed as 'unfortunate' the Government's failure to respond to the token protest undertaken by them on December 23 last year.

He pointed out that it was the right of every retired Government employee to be financially secure in their old age. He claimed that the NPS is violating this right and would render Government employees into beggars in the twilight of their lives.

He said that the Government must scrap the NPS and restore the old pension scheme in the interest of the Government employees.

It may be mentioned that the All Assam Government NPS (National Pension System) Employees' Association is an umbrella organization comprising around two lakh Government officers, teachers, employees and police personnel.
