GUWAHATI: The State Forest Department will operate drones to earmark houses built on different hills in the city. Speaking to reporters at the Assam Assembly premises here on Friday, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said such earmarking would prevent further human settlement on the hills. He said since the Forest department would regularly use drones to monitor human activities on city hills the department could easily spot or identify new settlements there in future.

"While the government will not touch the existing households on hills, it will, however, evict new settlement. We will also solve the land issue of hills dwellers permanently. Land pattas will be given to those hills dwellers that are found eligible as per the Forest Acts. The land patta beneficiaries must be Indian citizens," the Chief Minister said.
