GRP SI along with three arrested in connection to gold case in Guwahati

The involvement of police personnel in the transit of gold has come to light with the arrest of Sub Inspector Badri Prasad Baruwati.

GUWAHATI: The involvement of police personnel in the transit of gold has come to light with the arrest of Sub Inspector Badri Prasad Baruwati.

He was arrested in connection to a seizure of 835 gm gold which was made from two persons in the Bharalumukh area on Tuesday (June 15). During interrogation, the accused - Manoj Shah and Arman Ali narrated the involvement of Baruwati in the case.

The SI was working as a GRP (Government Railway Police) personnel at the Guwahati Railway Station for the last two years. Recently, he was appointed as the GRP in charge of Kamakhya Railway Station.

On Tuesday evening, under the leadership of Assistant Commissioner of Police Nandini Kakati, Baruwati's quarter in Nagaon Police Reserve was raided. Rs 3,88,000 along with gold ornaments were recovered from Baruwati's quarter. Meanwhile, in this connection, another raid was conducted at Bikaner Gems and Jewellery shop in Nagaon. The two accused who were arrested with the 835 gm gold were working under the shop's owner Ram Avatar Soni, who was also arrested and brought to Guwahati. It is to be mentioned that Baruwati's wife is also a GRP SI. The Police produced all the four accused in front of the CJM Court here on Wednesday. They have been sent to two-day police custody. The arrests of police personnel in gold-related cases are not new.

Before this, GRP assistant sub-inspector Shravan Kumar Jha was arrested in a gold-related case. Another sub-inspector from the Dispur Police Station was also arrested in a similar case.
