Guwahati: 36 kg opium seized; 4 arrested by Special Task Force of Assam Police

The Special Task Force (STF) of Assam Police was able to seize a sizeable amount of contraband opium during a recent operation on the outskirts of the city.

GUWAHATI: The Special Task Force (STF) of Assam Police was able to seize a sizeable amount of contraband opium during a recent operation on the outskirts of the city.

According to police sources, the STF had received information that narcotics were being transported from Manipur to Assam in a Mahindra Bolero Pickup commercial vehicle bearing registration number AS 01 QC 9956. Acting based on the information, an STF team under the supervision of the DIG STF Partha Sarathi Mahanta, led by Kalyan Kumar Pathak, Addl SP (HQ) Kamrup, cum Addl SP STF intercepted the vehicle at Amingaon.

On checking the vehicle, the police team was able to recover 36 packets of contraband concealed in secret compartments in the vehicle, which, upon opening, turned out to be opium. On checking, the total quantity was found to be 36 kg.

The police team was able to arrest four peddlers in connection with the incident. They were identified as Safiqul Ali (39) from village Islampur, PS Rangia; Mamtul Ali (31) from village Udiana Balapur, PS Rangia; Raju Ajli (35) from village Ghopla, PS Kamalpur; and Ainul Haque (38) from village Balagaon, PS Rangia.

The necessary legal action has been initiated at the Special Task Force Police Station.
