GUWAHATI: Following the sad road accident in Jalukbari that claimed the lives of 7 students, Dr. Kalyan Kalita, Professor and Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Assam Engineering College (AEC), has been named as the college's in-charge Principal.
Dr. Atul Bora will hand up the charge to Dr. Kalita with immediate effect.
Taking on twitter, Education Minister Ranoj Pegu wrote, "Dr. Kalyan Kalita, HoD, Dept. of Mechanical Engg, Assam Engg College, has been appointed as in-charge Principal of AEC.
Dr. Atul Bora, Principal, AEC and Dr. Sasanka Sekhar Sharma, Asstt Professor have been directed to proceed on leave immediately."
Dr. Kalyan Kalita, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Assam Engineering College, will take over immediately as the charge from Dr. Atul Bora, Principal, AEC, who is instructed to vacate the office till further notice.
Also asked to take a leave of absence till further notice is Dr. Sasanka Sekhar Sharma, an assistant professor in the department of electrical engineering.
In light of the unfortunate road accident, Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday requested that the Education Department launch a high-level investigation. CM Himanta Biswa Sarma requested that the committee conduct an investigation into the events that led to the disaster and the students' untimely deaths.
On the other hand, The Chief Minister also directed the Education Department to form a new committee to improve discipline, rules, and regulations in educational institution dormitories in order to prevent recurrence of any occurrence that could endanger the student community's life.
The committee will also investigate the severe enforcement of hostel in and out times, the complete prohibition of alcohol and other drugs on hostel campuses and in hostels, and the ban on the prolonged stay of former boarders. The group will also make recommendations for how to foster a positive sense of community within the hostels.
The Chief Minister also requested that a committee be formed by the Education Department to examine the current college and university election system and make recommendations regarding any changes that should be made in light of the frequent clashes that occur between students before and after elections.
