GUWAHATI: The dry season has just started in the region, and the citizens of Guwahati have already started facing problems due to the scarcity of water. Although the state government has been mentioning the success of the Jal Jeevan Mission, a large number of citizens remain far from the benefits of the drinking water supply.

Even after decades of starting the so-called revolutionary projects to supply clean water to each household in the city, many areas remain outside the ambit of any such projects. Despite the change in the government, this change has not been observed in this sector. Large localities, including Shantipur, Adingiri, Garchuk, Lokhra, etc., are still not receiving any water from such projects. Even several parts of the city that have pipeline connections are devoid of a trustworthy supply because of the regular disruptions in the supply.

These locations are dependent on the groundwater levels for sustaining daily life, but the same has also gone down recently, triggering problems for the local people. Similar developments have taken place in localities like Six Mile, Milanpur, GS Road, etc. In the face of a lack of proper water supply, they are forced to buy water regularly for all their needs, increasing the load on their pockets.

A resident of Shantipur said, “We see the minister giving speeches every day regarding the Jal Jeevan Mission, but we sitting in the heart of the city fail to see any pipes or taps for water supply at our homes. We are forced to buy water on a regular basis despite paying so much in taxes to the government.”

Another person staying in Hatigarh mentioned, “Water supply is unpredictable in our locality. One or two days we get water, and then there is a leak, which leads to disruption for the next week. We wonder how long it will take to ensure an uninterrupted supply.”
