GUWAHATI: An inmate of Guwahati Central Jail was tested COVID-19 positive, on Friday.
According to reports, the inmate, Jintu Nath was arrested by the 4 Dispur Police personnel on theft charges on June 1. After swab sampling he was sent to the jail and was lodged in a cell with 7 other inmates.
Kamrup (Metro) Deputy Commissioner Biswajit Pegu visited the jail and sent Nath to the hospital. The inmates who were lodged with Nath were also tested. Meanwhile, the four police personnel who arrested Nath have been quarantined.
It is to be mentioned that the jail has 1,117 inmates.
After the detection of the COVID patient, the district administration sealed the area and declared it as a containment zone. The extremities of the containment zone are – residence of Hiren Teron and office of Coffee Board to the north, adjacent road to Central Jail to the South, SSB Camp and Assam Police Plot to the east, and main gate of Central Gate to the west.
