GUWAHATI: Following the death of an inmate, the caretaker of the Aakar Foundation Facility was arrested by a police team on Thursday. Thirty-one years old Naba Kalita was found dead under mysterious circumstances on Wednesday.

Upon checking the footage of the surveillance cameras, the police identified Raktim who used to beat the deceased inmate named Naba Kalita, which ultimately led to his death on Wednesday.

Mridula Barkakati, the chairperson of the State Anti-Drug and Prohibition Council of Assam shared the details regarding how the caretaker used to beat the inmate as seen in the surveillance footage. She mentioned that Rankim used to tie the hands and legs of the youth and when he was pleading for drinking water, he used to tie his mouth as well for several hours at night. Naba Kalita was feeling uneasy and later he felt unconscious. After noticing him in an unconscious state, the people from the centre rushed him to a hospital.

The authorities have also sealed the rehabilitation centre for the violation of several regulations including proper trade licenses, documentation and registration with the regulating authorities for the rehabilitation of people with addictions.

Naba Kalita who belonged to the Silpukhuri area of the city died in a rehabilitation centre located in the Kahilipara area of the city. The family had accused that there were some problems from the end of the centre and that they had informed the family members that he was not feeling well and was admitted to the hospital. Only when they arrived at the hospital that they realised that he had passed away. They also mentioned that the deceased had multiple marks of injury on his body.

Although the concerned department had been taking several steps to stop deaddiction centres without proper permissions in the city, the key question is how could an organisation be operating illegally.
