Guwahati: Former Transport Dept Officer Gets 4 Years In Jail For Taking Rs 38,000 Bribe In 2015

Guwahati: A special court on Wednesday sentenced Debeswar Talukdar, who was nabbed while taking a bribe, to four years of rigorous imprisonment.

Talukdar, a senior assistant of the state's transport department, was fined Rs 18,000 and the court also ordered that on the failure of payment the fine, he would be kept in prison for two extra months.

He was caught red-handed by the sleuths of vigilance and anti-corruption on December 7, 2015, from his office at Khanapara.

As to police, Talukdar was trapped by the anti-corruption personnel after he demanded Rs 38,000 for issuing an 'assurance certificate' - which is required to procure a road permit - from a person whose identity was not disclosed.

Notably, at that time the normal fee for the certificate was Rs 800.

The anti-corruption sleuths found Rs 7,09,440 from various files lying on Talukdar's table. His residence was also searched in the evening.

Taking to the micro-blogging site, Assam Special DGP, GP Singh said, ''Sri Debeswar Talukdar, Senior Assistant of Transport department arrested red-handed by @DIR_VAC_ASSAM on Dec 7th, 2015 has been convicted today to 4 years Rigorous Imprisonment. @assampolice @CMOfficeAssam.''

The police filed a charge sheet after the investigation and the charges were framed on September 18, 2018.

Meanwhile, such cases are coming to the fore frequently and in one of these cases, in July this year, the vigilance and anti-corruption wing of Assam police also apprehended two state government officials red-handed while taking a bribe.

As per reports, in one of the incidents, the anti-corruption wing along with Morigaon police laid a trap and arrested red-handed Barsha Bora Bordoloi, district excise superintendent of Morigaon while accepting bribe money.

The said accused was arrested while demanding Rs 1 lakh from a person to provide a license for a wine shop in the district. She was arrested while accepting the bribe after a complaint was lodged against her.

Similarly, in another operation by the anti-corruption wing, one Nabajyoti Sarma, dealing assistant office of the block elementary education officer (BEEO), Khuwang, Dibrugarh was held while accepting bribe money.

Besides this, a police officer was recently arrested for allegedly raking in money fraudulently in Assam's Darrang district.

As per reports, the accused officer was identified as Utpal Bora who is the officer-in-charge (OC) at Kharupetia police station in Darrang district.

Bora allegedly used to file fake cases against people in a bid to grab money from them.

Reportedly, he also demanded a bribe of Rs 5 lakh from a teacher and a doctor after filing fake complaints against them.

This was going on for a long time and eventually, his wrongdoings came to the fore following he was apprehended.
