GUWAHATI: Amid the heavy rush in the markets of the city ahead of the Durga Puja, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) carried out an eviction drive in the Fancy Bazar area.

The Fancy Bazar area is the biggest shopping hub in the city, and the area is jam-packed with shoppers ahead of the Durga Puja festival, which is just a few days away. The GMC undertook the eviction drive on Wednesday to clear the footpaths of vendors. The authorities removed the small traders who were selling clothes, fruits, and a variety of small items on the footpath. The eviction drive created a heated situation in Fancy Bazar as the GMC officials tried to remove the vendors, while the vendors denied clearing the areas. What started with a war of words later escalated to manhandling and chaos.

One of the local vendors mentioned, "We have already bought our supplies for sale during the Durga Puja season to make a living. Since the Fancy Bazar area is very popular among both locals and visitors, a large number of possible customers walk through these streets, making this locality an excellent location for us. We do not understand why GMC has taken this action now, just when the number of customers has increased. What will we do with our supplies if we are not allowed to sell during this season? How are we supposed to make a living?" Meanwhile, the GMC has announced that they will be carrying out similar drives in other parts of the city as well.
