GUWAHATI: Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has taken the initiative to restore the functioning of Biomethanation plants situated at Beelpar, Chatribari, Paltanbazar, from today i.e. from 10th February, 2022.
Notably, the GMC has engaged GPS renewable Technology for installation, Commissioning and Operation and Maintenance of the said Bio-methanation plant with capacity of 5 TPD to generate energy from organic municipal solid waste.
The energy, generated from plant will be used for operation of plant as well as for glowing of street lights in the city.
Organic Waste generated in and around Paltan Bazar and Fancy Bazar will be collected for the purpose.
It is to be mentioned here that daily requirement of the plant is around 5000 kilos of segregated organic waste which in turn will produce 800 units of electricity as well as 450 kilos of manure.
The plant was formally inaugurated on 13/08/2020. Initially, the plant was running by using Food Waste and Vegetable waste generated from the Hotels, Restaurants and Vegetable Markets situated at Paltan Bazar area. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown, the required input of waste could not be supplied to the plant. The plant was not running with its full capacity since then.
Now, GMC has taken the initiatives to make the plant functional again from 10/02/2022. Accordingly, the NGOs engaged for door-to-door collection of waste of Ward No. 9, 10, 14 and 18 will supply organic waste to the plant. In near future, waste from other nearby wards will also be collected and it will be supplied to the plant as raw material.
