Guwahati Police Crime branch seeks technical support from WhatsApp

Guwahati Police Crime branch has sought technical support from the WhatsApp corporate office to probe the cyber crime cases

GUWAHATI: Guwahati Police Crime branch has sought techincal support from the WhatsApp corporate office to probe the cyber crime cases involving State Industries, Commerce and Public Enterprises and Cultural Affairs Minister Bimal Borah as well Kamrup (M) Deputy Commissioner Pallav Gopal Jha.

Borah had lodged an FIR at the Dispur Police Station against some fraudsters who had opened a fake WhatsApp account using his photograph. According to the FIR, the number used by the fraudsters is 7780915086, which is being used to send messages to some officials of the Industries, Commerce & Public Enterprises Department. Borah told mediapersons that he suspected some cyber criminals from outside the State of opening the fake WhatsApp account with the aim of earning some easy money through illegal means.

On the other hand, the FIR lodged on behalf of Pallav Gopal Jha at the Panbazar Police Station states that 'a certain fraudster' is impersonating the Deputy Commissioner and "soliciting various financial transactions from different individuals, including officers of the district administration using different phone numbers". The three numbers mentioned in the FIR are 8761037936, 96536-45522 and 9328780227.

Both cases have been handed over to the Guwahati Police Crime Branch. The Crime Branch has registered a case 6/22. Sources said that after the Crime Branch receives the report from the WhatsApp corporate office, it will proceed with the investigation.
