GUWAHATI: The Residents of Guwahati may get tape water connection at their doorsteps by this July 2022.

Speaking to the media, Assam GDD Minister Ashok Singhal said that the government has now successfully brought down the water from its mother reservoir.

Further, the minister added that all the gaps/leaks have been addressed and soon the door-to-door water connection service shall commence.

"This is the month of March, hopefully by the month of July we shall start providing water," Singhal added.

Notably, the first water project began in 2009 in South West Guwahati. In 2011, the two water projects were started in South Central Guwahati and North Guwahati. Lastly, the South Central Guwahati water project was started in 2016.

Earlier in 2021, Rupjyoti Taluk, the executive engineer in charge of the project implementation unit of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) said, "The South-West Guwahati water supply project has been partially commissioned in November last year. The South-Central Guwahati water supply project, which is the biggest one, will be commissioned by July next year as just around 25% work is left to be completed."

The South West Guwahati project is funded by Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) while the South East Guwahati project is funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

Currently, most of the city residents have to rely on private water suppliers, tubewell, hand pumps or other sources for water.
