GUWAHATI: Cricket is by far the most popular sport in the country. Although football also plays a very important part in the sports scenario of the northeast region, cricket also occupies an important spot. And this is evident from the fact rush at the Barshapara Cricket stadium since Tuesday morning.

The crowds started arriving at the Assam Cricket Association Stadium on Monday at noon to catch a glimpse of their favourite stars. Although a huge majority of the people had to return from the main gate itself, a few did see their dreams come true. One of them was a young boy who broke into tears when he came face to face with the captain of the Indian cricket team, Rohit Sharma. While the Sri Lankan Team went for net practice in the afternoon, the Indian team went for the same under the floodlights.

The stadium gates opened for the enthusiasts three hours before the scheduled commencement of the match at 1:30 PM, but people started to arrive at the venue in the early morning. Enthusiasts have come from Majuli and Lakhimpur as well and have waited in queues since morning to enter the stadium. Fans are expecting a good performance from the home team. A century from Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma is among the top expectations of the fans.

Although several restrictions were issued by the local administration for the smooth movement of people and vehicles, traffic came to a virtual standstill in the morning hours. Roads near the stadium remained packed with viewers and enthusiasts for the teams.

The teams started arriving at the venue at about 11:30 AM, two hours ahead of the match and were greeted by the boisterous crowds cheering for the home team.

Although multiple points of sale were established by several organisations including Book My Show and Assam Cricket Association, a large number of tickets remained unsold. People have mentioned the high prices of the tickets as the main reason for tickets remaining unsold.
