Guwahati University Student arrested for impersonating Chief Minister's image

GUWAHATI: The Crime Branch of Assam Police has arrested a student of Gauhati University for allegedly impersonating the image of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and circulating the disinformation of a forged appeal by the CM on social media.

The accused, Dipjyoti Gogoi was arrested from his residence at Demow in Sivasagar by the Crime Branch with assistance from the local police. He was brought to Guwahati and a case (11/2020) has been registered by the Crime Branch under section 419/420/34 IPC, R/W section 66 © of IT Act. The accused was produced in front of the court on Tuesday following which he was sent to 14-day judicial custody. According to reports, using the Assam Government's logo and CM Sonowal's photo, Gogoi appealed to the people to contribute for Assam Floods. He posted the message at a group in social media in which he also mentioned the account number of the Chief Minister Relief Fund. "Let us extend our helping hand towards the flood victims. Your contribution can bring smile to the faces of flood-affected people," the forged post read.
