NEW DELHI: Urns with soil from Assam for construction of an Amrit Vatika arrived at New Delhi Railway Station here by the Delhi-bound Rajdhani Express on Saturday afternoon.
As many as 270 urns filled with soil were collected from 26,098 villages and towns in Assam over the past five weeks arrived in the national capital.
A rousing reception was accorded to the participants, volunteers and officials by Minister for Cultural Affairs, Bimal Borah, Resident Commissioner, Assam Bhawan, MS Manivannan, Secretary, Cultural Affairs, Monidipa Borkataky and other officials at the railway station. A festive atmosphere prevailed with Bihu dance being performed by the artistes. Chants of Bharat Maata Ki Jai and Jai Aai Asom rent the air. Rose and marigold petals were showered on the participants and volunteers as they walked out of the platform.
People of Assam living in Delhi-NCR and representatives of 17 associations, including Assam Association, Asom Sahitya Sabha, Assam Science Society, Uruli and Samannay took part in the event.
As part of the ‘Meri Maati Mera Desh’ (MMMD) campaign, the ‘Amrit Kalash Yatra’ carrying soil in 7,500 urns from every corner of the country is expected to reach the national capital from October 28 to 30 to mark the culmination of the campaign. Soil from across the country will be used for building an Amrit Vatika in honour of the martyrs and bravehearts at Kartavya Path near the National War Memorial in the national capital at a two-day function to be held on October 30 and 31. The Amrit Kalash Yatra kickstarted in Assam on September 20 and continued till October 26 in every village and municipal ward with people coming out in large numbers to take part in the campaign.
