GUWAHATI: In a notification, Guwahati Metropolitan Drinking Water and Sewerage Board informed the city dwellers that Rajgarh and Pub-Sarania area's water supply will be disconnected for the next 48 hours.

The connection will be resumed on Friday.

The Board through the notification informed that the supply will be disconnected for these two days as there is pipe repairing work going on in Zoo Road Tiniali.

The Board also regretted putting the people in those areas through this trouble.

It is to be noted here that only a meager 30% of the 3 lakh households in the megacity have access to tap water and the rest have to depend on tubewell and private water suppliers which charge a hefty price for the service.

The state government and the Guwahati Municipal Corporation came around to a solution to this problem by constructing four water supply projects in the city which are not yet completed. The four water supply projects in South-west Guwahati, South-Central Guwahati, North Guwahati, and South-east Guwahati which were started at around the same time around 2011 have not been completed for a decade now.

Earlier this year before the Municipal Elections, a sit-in was organized by some residents of the Beltola area of the city demanding a solution to the decade-old drinking water problem in the city.

When completed these projects would be able to distribute 135 liters of water per person a day. Though it seems a little far-fetched looking at the present scenario.

According to a report, more than 50 percent of urban dwellers in India have no access to clean drinking water. Overall more than 16 crore people in India have no access to a clean drop of water.

With the coming in of new technologies like IoT(Internet of Things) the cities should try to embrace these technologies to solve the water woes of the country as with IoT technology real-time tracking of input water quality, water consumption, and filter use is being tracked which assures safe drinking water.
