GUWAHATI: In a bid to provide fresh air for the people of Guwahati and to compensate for massive deforestation in the city, the state administration made way for the creation of another botanical garden in the city. This project is being set up on the premises of the Old Jail Complex in Fancy Bazar, Guwahati.

This project had a budget of Rs 31 crore, and the work started in January 2022. It was informed that over 90 per cent of the work has been completed, as the scheduled opening date was previously mentioned to be August 15.

But soon after the photos of the project were released over social media, they became an object of fun for the citizens because of the nearly negligible number of trees shown in those images. The public commented that the whole establishment was more of a concrete setup than a botanical garden and added that it would not be beneficial for the people of the city. Some commented that it would have been better if the local urban body had sanctioned massive multi-level car parking in the area, which could have brought massive relief to the people. It can be mentioned that the chief minister made an announcement saying that this area will see a massive plantation of trees of medicinal value, and it remains to be seen if that promise to the people of the city is actually fulfilled.
