GUWAHATI: The prices of several food items including fruits and vegetables have increased significantly in recent times. The steep increase in the prices of these essential items has left the citizens of the city with deep frustration.

Several items including onions, chillies, brinjal and other vegetables as well as fruits have seen an increase in the prices in the last few days. With no significant reason for the sudden inflation in the prices has caused problems for the middle and low-income groups.

One person residing in the Six Mile locality of the city mentioned that until last week the prices of several food items were much lower, this week the prices have increased significantly. We have no idea why the prices are increasing rapidly, but it is becoming really difficult for us to manage the expenses.

Speaking to the Sentinal one vegetable seller mentioned that the prices have increased at the whole seller level itself and they are not making any extra money. He also added that the prices can be controlled at the wholesaler or stocklist level.

The owner of a local eatery who did not want to be named said, “The hike in the prices has hit us the hardest. It has become impossible for us to make a living in this line. Given the prices of the raw materials, it is impossible for us to serve good quality and quantity at limited prices. Either we have to increase the prices or compromise with quantity or taste, and in both conditions, we lose customers”
