Guwahati: Close on the heels of the State's Directorate of Secondary Education starting departmental proceedings against secondary school teachers who have been working as Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) agents, journalists or any other side profession, the Directorate of Elementary Education (DEE) has also launched a similar drive.

The Directorate of Elementary Education has issued a letter to all District Elementary Education Officers to look into the matter and submit their respective reports to clarify whether any teaching or non-teaching employees of Government and provincialized schools are engaging themselves as LIC agents, journalists or in any other profession.

The letter mentions that the Directorate has received several complaints in this regard from the public and other sources, including the LIC Agents' Association.

Further, the letter states that such teachers are employees of the Government and all of them are governed by provisions of the Assam Civil Service (Conduct) Rules, 1965. "They cannot engage themselves in any other profession as per rules. Any violation of the aforesaid rules attracts disciplinary action against the erring employees," the letter states.

The State Directorate of Secondary Education has started departmental proceedings against secondary school teachers who have been working as LIC (Life Insurance Corporation) agents.

The Director of Secondary Education has sent confidential letters to 11 secondary school teachers - nine of the Baksa district and two of the Kamrup district - who work as LIC agents.

The development came close on the heels of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma asking the authorities concerned to identify the teachers working as LIC agents and take action against them.

The entire issue stemmed from the poor performance in the HSLC (High School Leaving Certificate) examination-2022 by 102 government schools in the state whose pass percentage was 10 per cent or below. The pass percentage of 25 of the 102 secondary schools in the state was zero.
