GUWAHATI: Former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has said that the report of the High-Level Committee on Clause VI of the Assam Accord should be made public and implemented, and the government shouldn’t term it a waste paper as it termed the NRC.

Addressing the media in his official residence here on Thursday, Gogoi said, “Instead of thanking the High-Level Committee for its timely completion of the report, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has neglected the report. The report should have been received by the MHA, but it is being sent to the MHA via the Chief Minister. Why’s such neglect? Nobody knows what’s going to happen to the NRC. They term the NRC a waste paper. Let the report of the High-Level Committee not meet the fate what the NRC met. I demand that the report of the High-Level Committee be made public and implemented.”

When asked on the Opposition’s prospects on one of the three Rajya Sabha seats from Assam, Gogoi said, “If a common candidate is fielded, I prefer to back a candidate without any political affiliation. The candidate should be competent enough to raise Assam issues in the Elder’s House.”

On the formation an alternative political party in the State, Gogoi said, “The floating of a party for the name sake doesn’t make any difference. There should be a strong party against the BJP.”

On the recent India visit of US President Donald Trump, Gogoi said that the political heads of the two countries were all praise for each other at a time when Delhi was burning. “I, however, doubt if Trump praised Modi or just made fun of him,” he said.

Holding the Centre responsible for the current violence in Delhi, Gogoi said, “The situation smacks of total failure of the Ministry of Home Affairs. Union Home Minister Amit Shah should step down immediately. Such a situation erupted in Delhi following hate speeches by BJP leaders Anurag Thakur and Kapil Mishra. The government is responsible for any failure on the part of the police force.” On the transfer of a judge of Delhi High Court, Gogoi said, “If the judiciary faces such action, who will protect the common man? The democracy is under threat now.”
