GUWAHATI: Senior leader of Congress and Member of Parliament Gaurav Gogoi feels that the INC (Indian National Congress) in Assam should be independent of the 'Mahajot'. Gogoi stressed this during a one-on-one meeting with the APCC (Assam Pradesh Congress Committee) president Bhupen Bora.
Revealing this in a press release on Friday, Gogoi said, "The INC is the only party that can take on the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party). For that, we need to strengthen our party organisation across Assam including those constituencies where there are MLAs of the 'Mahajot'.
"The 'Mahajot' was finalised a few months before the 2021 elections. Prior to that, the party had fulfilled its duty as an Opposition party on its own. Going forward inside the Assam assembly, the party may still consult the other Opposition parties if and when the BJP government brings anti-people policies.
"The people have huge expectations from the Congress party; and, if we will fulfil them, we will form the next government in 2026. These sentiments are not only mine but that of thousands of party workers across the State."
