GUWAHATI: Congress leader and Member of Parliament (MP) Gaurav Gogoi has urged the Assam Police to increase the security cover for Congress Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) Rupjyoti Kurmi after he was fired upon by alleged encroachers of Nagaland on May 27.

In a letter to Assam Director General of Police, Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, Gogoi has sought additional security for Kurmi and wrote, "This security will not only ensure his well-being but also allow him to carry out his duties as an elected representative more efficiently."

It is to be mentioned here that earlier on May 27, Rupjyoti Kurmi, MLA of Mariani while visiting the Disai Valley Reserve Forest area under Jorhat district of Assam -Nagaland border to enquire about the border dispute and gauge the situation was fired by Naga miscreants.

Further, the MLA had a narrow escape from around 15 to 20 rounds of shots that were fired targeting him by the miscreants' right after he entered the Disai Valley Reserve Forest area.

Kurmi was accompanied by two personal security officer and three state police constables for his security. On the other hand, Assam chief minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his concern over the incident and directed special DGP, Assam Police, GP Singh, to visit the spot and conduct a comprehensive inquiry.
