GUWAHATI: To curb the usage of single-use plastics, enhance environmental sustainability, and reduce plastic waste, the city has implemented a ban on the sale and use of plastic flags ahead of Independence Day. The local shopkeepers in Ulubari, Silpukhuri, and Six Mile areas have already taken steps to work on it.

Pallav Gopal Jha, District Commissioner of Kamrup (M), said that "since single-use plastics are banned, the sale of plastic flags should also be banned. We will take strict action if anyone seems to disobey."

The ban on plastic flags reflects the city's commitment to sustainable practises and the public's determination to reduce plastic waste. The administration also aimed to adopt eco-friendly alternatives for a greener future and encourage its citizens.

According to a shopkeeper, "We are not selling plastic flags this time. People buy from us for the day, and the next day it lies on the ground. We should take more such steps to encourage people and contribute to a better environment."

Another shopkeeper said, "This time the supply of plastic flags is less than in previous years."
