GUWAHATI: The Alumni Association (Northeast Chapter) of the Indian Institute of Mass Communication named “Connection 2023” was organised in Guwahati on Saturday. Presiding over the gathering, Dr Samudra Gupta Kashyap, the State Information Commissioner of Assam mentioned that “formal media and mass communication education not only make one professionally qualified for serving in the Media industry, but also sharpens one’s communication skills to do better in any other field.”

He added that being professionally qualified and trained, students passing out from the prestigious IIMC have excelled in various fields. “IIMC alumni are all over. All good media houses, all good editors prefer IIMC pass-outs. But besides media, IIMC graduates have also found a place in various government services including the IAS, IPS and IFS. The voluntary sector is also increasingly recruiting IIMC alumni,” the official said.

Speaking in the occasion, former IIMC Alumni Association president Prasad Sanyal said it is important that aspiring journalists and media professionals from the Northeastern region target IIMC as their first choice. “It is heartening to note that IIMC graduates are today spread across the Northeastern region. Significantly, they have not remained confined to media, but have entered various other fields. A few of them are also successful entrepreneurs,” Sanyal added.

Nibir Deka handed over the IIMCAA-IFFCO Best Reporter award (Broadcast category) in the meet on Saturday. The award carries a cheque of Rs 50,000 and a trophy. More than twenty IIMC alumni from across the Northeast took part in the meeting.
