Indian Tea Association celebrates World Environment Day

The Secretary General, Indian Tea Association, Kolkata, elaborated on various facets of climate change, such as degradation of soil and water pollution, and explained the inter-linkage between them.

GUWAHATI: The Indian Tea Association celebrated World Environment Day by organizing a webinar on the virtual platform involving the various stakeholders on June 5. The Chairperson, ITA, Nayantara Palchoudhuri, emphasized the importance of having a road map for ensuring a healthy and safe environment, which must be carefully nurtured by future generations. The Secretary General, Indian Tea Association, Kolkata, elaborated on various facets of climate change, such as degradation of soil and water pollution, and explained the inter-linkage between them. He also spoke on the proper usage and disposal of plastic to curb plastic pollution.

Speaking on the occasion, Mandira Buragohain, Project Officer, Knowledge Management and Climate Change, Assam State Disaster Management Authority, Revenue and DM Department, Govt. of Assam, laid stress on generating awareness amongst the tea estate population, especially the school-going children, on preserving and evolving a long-term action plan to address environmental issues. The manager of Basmatia Tea Estate, members of the Mothers’ Club from Moran and Basmatia Tea Estates, and an ABITA-UNICEF Project representative spoke on the occasion and reiterated their commitment to protecting the environment through interactions on key issues, such as the non-use of plastic and community awareness programmes.

In the majority of the tea estates under ABITA, the day was celebrated with the planting of trees and also spreading awareness. It may be noted that tea gardens, by their very nature, have a variety of plantations within the tea grant area and have played a crucial role in the micromanagement of climate-related manifestations, stated a press release.
