GUWAHATI: If one stands near the Down Town Hospital in the city for around 10 minutes, one can see people jumping over the road divider to cross the road now and then. People do this because they are in a hurry and want to save time but they do not realize that by doing so they are only risking their lives. A foot flyover in front of Down Town Hospital is, therefore, the need of the hour.

Earlier, there was no road divider. There was a traffic police point in front of Down Town Hospital point. When vehicles would stop at the traffic signal, people could easily cross the road. The bus stoppage is nearby and people could cross the road quickly and board the city buses.

But after the Dispur Supermarket flyover was constructed, a road divider came up at the Down Town Hospital point. Residents of neighbouring areas like Mathura Nagar, Hengrabari and Dwarka Nagar, as well as people coming to the hospital, started facing problems in crossing the road. The zebra crossing is located at a distance. So when people are in a hurry, especially in the morning to reach their offices or drop off their children at school, they save time by precariously jumping over the road divider to cross the road. While doing so, people do not even bother about the speeding vehicles coming from the other side of the road. This is a disaster waiting to happen.

People who jump over the road divider are not only putting their lives at risk but others as well. Hence, the residents and traders of the area have opined that a foot flyover should come up in front of the Down Town Hospital for the convenience of commuters.
