Irrigation Minister Ashok Singhal asks engineers to emulate successful projects of other States

GUWAHATI: An orientation programme for the newly promoted/transferred Superintending Engineers, Executive Engineers and Assistant Executive Engineers of Irrigation Department was held on Tuesday at Srimanta Shankardeva International Auditorium in Guwahati. The programme organized by the Department of Irrigation, was attended by Ashok Singhal, Minister of Irrigation, Housing and Urban Affairs, stated a press release.

Speaking on the occasion, the minister emphasized how the Department of Irrigation could be a major contributor to the State economy by catering to the needs of the agriculture sector. He said that an agricultural boom was possible with three fold production when provided with proper irrigation and facilities to the farming community of the State. Moreover, the minister even gave the example of 'lift irrigation' projects carried out by Telengana government where the water is transported using external energy instead of its natural flow to reach the untapped areas. He asked the engineers of the department to emulate such successful projects of other States for the development of irrigation scenario in Assam.

The meeting was also attended by Rajesh Prasad, Principal Secretary to the Department of Irrigation, Transport and Soil Conservation, among others.
