Kalita Janagosthi Yuba-Chatra Parishad protests highlighting their 10-point demands

Members of the Kalita Janagosthi Yuba-Chatra Parishad staged a protest at Chachal in Guwahati in support of their 10-point set of demands. The members of the Kalita Janagosthi Mahila Parishad also took part in the protest, as they demanded a meeting with the chief minister of the state to discuss their demands.

GUWAHATI: Members of the Kalita Janagosthi Yuba-Chatra Parishad staged a protest at Chachal in Guwahati in support of their 10-point set of demands. The members of the Kalita Janagosthi Mahila Parishad also took part in the protest, as they demanded a meeting with the chief minister of the state to discuss their demands.

The demands put forward by the organisation include the granting of the Scheduled Tribes category to the Kalita people and granting protected status to the Kalita community in the Sadiya Tribal Belt. Creation of Pragjyotishpur and granting it autonomous status for the development and benefit of the community. They also asked for ensuring the land rights for the Kalitas in the areas under the 6th Schedule, the carious autonomous councils of the state, and the creation of Bhagadutta Bhawans and related projects in all districts of the state.

The next demand put forward by the representatives of the organisation was the grant of Rs 1000 crore for the development of the Kalita Development Council. Allocation of five positions on the Kalita Development Council to members of the Kalita Janagosthi Yuba-Chatra Parishad and 30% reservation in all government employment processes as well as in educational institutions for the members of the community. Their final demand was that the government undertake free coaching classes for the economically challenged students of the community for APSC, UPSC, and other examinations.
