GUWAHATI: Kamrup District Administration initiated a project titled Super-20 (Sopan) with IIT Guwahati in a bid to offer students of Government Schools in Kamrup District the confidence to appear in All India Engineering Entrance Exams like JEE, AIEEE, etc. on Friday at the Conference Hall of the Integrated Deputy Commissioner Office, Kamrup, Amingaon. The agreement was signed by Keerthi Jalli, Deputy Commissioner, Kamrup, on behalf of Kamrup District Administration, and Professor Parameswar K. Iyer, Officiating Director, IIT Guwahati, on behalf of IIT Guwahati. The programme was conducted in the presence of the top 20 students who passed the screening test conducted by Kamrup District Administration for students of Government schools who have completed class Xl and are entering class Xll. The District Administration has selected 20 students for this programme through a written test held on May 27 by Inspector of Schools Apurba Thakuria. Under this programme, one year of free training will be offered to the selected students for appearing in competitive exams through online and offline modes.
Launching the programme, the Deputy Commissioner said that this step was taken in a bid to see more students from Kamrup attend a premier institute like IIT-Guwahati, which is housed in Kamrup District itself. Addressing the students aspirants, Professor Parameswar K. Iyer, Officiating Director,IIT, Guwahati, said that the number of successful students in JEE/AIEEE examinations from the North East region is very low so far as some states are concerned. So, to increase the number of successful students in these examinations, the Kamrup District Administration’s step is a welcome one, and hence IIT Guwahati readily agreed for free mentorship.
The students were brought from across the district, like Chaygaon, Rangia, Hajo, etc., and had a day-long exposure visit to the IIT Campus and the Deputy Commissioner’s office. The MoU signing was attended by Dr. Jiwan Krishna Goswami, Addl. Deputy Commissioner, Kamrup; Professor A.S. Achalkumar; Prof. Debanga Raj Neog, IIT, Guwahati; Gunomoni Das, Deputy Registrar, IIT, Guwahati; Apurba Thakuria, Inspector of Schools, Kamrup; selected students under the Super-20 programme; and the district resource persons, stated a press release.
