GUWAHATI: Kamrup (M) Deputy Commissioner Pallav Gopal Jha has instructed police, transport department and Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) officials to take strict action to rein in city bus drivers who flout various rules.

At a meeting held on Wednesday, the Deputy Commissioner instructed that fresh signposts be affixed at all the 60 designated city bus stops in the city and any city bus driver who halts his vehicle at any place other than these stops should be dealt with sternly.

Jha also directed that no city bus driver should be henceforth allowed to stop their respective vehicle on the flyovers of the city.

In a related development, a GMC official informed that the decision to demarcate various city bus stops in the city has been taken because city bus drivers and conductors frequently use the pretext that there are unable to properly discern the designated bus stops.

From now, action will taken errant drivers instead of the bus owners for any unauthorized stoppages of the vehicle, the official said.
