GUWAHATI: An award-presentation meeting under the aegis of 'Sabita Sabha, Guwahati' was organized at the Guwahati Press Club premises here on Friday. The award is presented every year in the memory of noted researcher Kanak Chandra Deka to the recipient of highest mark in the history subject in the graduation examination among the students of the colleges under Guwahati University.
The award was presented for two years for the sessions 2019 and 2020. The recipients are Rupsikha Kalita of Nagaon College and Maitrayee Moni Kalita of Mangaldai College respectively for those years. Each of the award comprising a gamocha, a bundle of books, a citation, a memento and Rs 10,000 in cash were presented by Irabati Deka -- wife of (Late) Kanak Chandra Deka -- renowned litterateur, academic and recipient of the International Tulsi Award (Florida, US).
The meeting was set in motion with the chanting of 'Mangalacharanam'. The meeting was presided over by Dr. Barindra Kumar Sarma, retired Professor of Physics, Guwahati University and member of the Sabita Sabha, Guwahati, and silent prayers were offered for the eternal bliss of the soul.
As the chief guest, the Head of History department of Guwahati University Dr Rajib Handique inaugurated the meeting and delivered his speech on the occasion.
At the initial stage of the meeting, the wife of the litterateur-researcher Kanak Chandra Deka and the invited dignitaries lighted the ceremonial lamp and also paid floral tributes in front of the photograph of the litterateur Late Deka.
A brief life sketch of the late scholar was provided by Binanda Kumar Gogoi -- social activist, and companion of the researcher.
Participating in the meeting as a Special Guest, the Vice Chancellor of Nagaland Global open university Dr Hemendra Nath Dutta emphasized the essentiality of studying history. He appreciated the endeavour to institute the award, adding that the move will go a long way to create a healthy academic scenario.
Also present in the meeting as the honoured guest, former Secretary of the Meghalaya Public Works Departement and a close associate of Late Deka, Ramani Sarma remembered the association.
Both the award recipients in their brief acceptance speeches expressed gratitude to the Sabita Sabha and the family of late Kanak Ch. Deka.
In the meeting, a short speech was delivered on behalf of the family of Late Kanak Ch. Deka by Smti Irabati Deka wife of Late Deka.
In the presidential address, the president Dr. Barindra Kumar Sarma congratulated the award recipients and expressed heartfelt gratitude to the family of Late Kanak Ch. Deka, stated a press release.
Earlier, the general secretary of Sabita Sabha, Guwahati, Dr Roman Sarma accorded warm welcome to the dignitaries. He also said that such an award-presentation ceremony has been organized with a views to attracting attention of the society to be aware of the necessity of studying history and also to inculcate a sense of eagerness in the minds of the students to study history.
The vote of thanks was offered by Dr Roman Sarma, general secretary of Sabita Sabha, Guwahati.
