GUWAHATI: The Koch Rajbongshi National Convention (KRNC) has welcomed the Assam Governor's approval to rename the Bodoland Territorial Areas District (BTAD) to Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR).

While addressing the media, State Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday announced about the Governor's approval to rename the BTAD to BTR.

In this regard, KRNC general secretary Biswajit Ray said the body welcomes the Chief Minister for the State government's decision.

"We hope that the BTC elections will be cancelled and the Code of Conduct will be withdrawn from the region. Now the elections should be held for BTR," Ray opined.

He highlighted that while under BTC there were 40 constituencies, there will be 60 in BTR.

"Out of the 60 constituencies, 20 should be reserved for the Koch Rajbongshis and other non-tribal communities," he demanded on behalf of the KRNC.

Ray stressed that the KRNC is now hopeful that the government will now focus on their long-standing demand to exclude the non-tribal villages from the BTAD region.

"We hope that the PP Verma commission to redraw the boundary of BTAD will exclude the non-tribal villages from the region. We demand that for the political, social, economic, employment and land rights of the Koch Rajbongshis a law should be formed in BTR," Ray added.
