GUWAHATI: With a view of development, the ethnic people of lower Assam have recently formed a Lower Assam Development Council and an ad-hoc committee headed by Kailash Sarma.

In a statement, ad-hoc committee president Sarma underlined that the ethnic people residing in the region are socially, economically and politically lacking behind. "There are no industries in the region; however, the agricultural productivity is rich than other regions of the State. The people of the region are highly educated but the unemployment rate is high. Thus, to focus on the problems of lower Assam, the development council has been formed," Sarma stated.

To discuss on the aforementioned issues a meeting comprising various noted persons from the region was held on September 19.

Various issues faced by the people of lower Assam were highlighted following which the council was formed, said Sarma. "We are deprived of many issues and the development council is needed to focus on all the issues," he reiterated. Sarma underlined that a new committee will be formed in October to form a constitution for the council. Further, he added that the council will hold meeting with the Chief Minister and Finance Minister to place their demands.
