GUWAHATI: The Bharalumukh Police has arrested a person for allegedly trying to kill his newborn daughter.
The accused has been identified as Bapi Sarkar, a resident of Lal Ganesh here.
According to the FIR lodged by Sarkar's brother in law, the accused tried to kill the baby with a sharp weapon on April 26.
The FIR read that the accused was in his mother in law's house with his wife at Aryapath under Bharalumukh Police Station. At around 4:30 am on that day, he assaulted the baby with a sharpened weapon. Hearing the hue and cry of his wife, people present at the house and the neighbours intervened following which the baby was rescued.
The baby was admitted to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, and Sarkar was handed over to police. The police have suspect that the accused tried to kill the newborn as he didn't want a girl child.
In this regard, a case has been registered at the Bharalumukh PS u/s 326/307 r/w section 75 of Juvenile Justice Act. The accused has been sent to judicial custody.
