GUWAHATI: Acting on specific information, the anti-smuggling team of Guwahati Customs Division arrested one person named Ketan Maniksingh Rajput (26) near Down Town Hospital on Saturday night and seized 22 gold bars weighing 3617.84 gms valued at around Rs 1.77 crore from his possession.
Initial investigation revealed that the accused hails from Maharashtra's Sangli district and had been actively involved in smuggling and transportation of smuggled gold for quite some time. The gold bars, according to sources, had been smuggled from Myanmar and the bars had foreign marking. The accused was on his way to deliver the gold bars in Fancy Bazar when he was arrested near Down Town Hospital.
The custom officers are further carrying out necessary investigation to bust this gold smuggling racket which has been quite active in and out of Guwahati. The accused was produced before the CJM court on Sunday and remanded to two days' custody.
