GUWAHATI: The court of the Special Judge, POCSO (Kamrup-M) on Thursday sentenced a man named Rabindra Phukan to 20 years' rigorous imprisonment for sexually abusing a minor boy.

The prosecution established that the victim was about 12 years old when the crime took place.

The culprit prayed for clemency in award of punishment on the ground of family responsibilities, but the judge awarded two sentences under different laws - 10 years' rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 10,000 under Section 377 IPC and 20 years' rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Rs 10,000 under Section 4 of the POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act. Both sentences would run concurrently. The judge stated that in view of the age of the victim at the time of the crime and the nature of the offence, he is not inclined to extend the benefit of clemency. The judge further ordered that in accordance with the Assam Victim Compensation Scheme 2012 and a standing recommendation of the Supreme Court, an interim compensation of Rs 50,000 should be granted to the victim under the supervision of the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA).
