GUWAHATI: Manjula Das has been appointed as the Acting Chairman of the Central Administrative Tribunal, Principal Bench, New Delhi stated a notification issued by the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions (Department of Personnel and Training), Government of India.
Before taking over the charge of Chairman of the Tribunal, Das was posted as a Judicial Member/HoD in the Calcutta and Guwahati Benches of the Tribunal. She has the distinction of being the first woman to have ever held the office of the Chairman of the Tribunal, since its inception in 1985. She is also the first person from the North Eastern Region to hold this position.
Before appointment as Member in the Tribunal, Das was a prominent Lawyer having practised in different streams of law, for about 25 years. She practised as an Advocate in different High Courts, besides the Guwahati Bench of the Tribunal. She served as a Government Advocate for the State of Assam in the Guwahati High Court as well as in the Central Administrative Tribunal, Guwahati Bench.
She also served as Senior Panel Counsel and Senior Central Government Standing Counsel in CAT, Guwahati Bench. Her initial appointment as Judicial Member in the Tribunal was in the year 2011.
