GUWAHATI: The Trade Union & Employees Federation, Assam, an umbrella organization of eight trade unions of the State, has extended its support to the nationwide two-day general strike (hartal) on March 28 and March 29, which has called by the Joint Platform of Central Trade Unions.
The general strike has been called to protest against policies of the Government that are adversely affecting workers, farmers and common people.
In concert with the nationwide general strike, the Assam Motor Workers' Association (AMWA) has called for a 48-hour chakka bandh across the State on Monday and Tuesday. According to a statement issued by the AMWA, the chaka bandh has been called because of the State Government's harassment of commercial motor vehicle owners and workers. Private public transport services, including buses and taxis, would remain off the roads on these two days.
Some bank employees' unions are also planning to join the nationwide agitation, which may result in banking services being hit in the State on Monday and Tuesday. The All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA) said has that the organization will join the nationwide general strike to protest against increased unemployment, reduced wages, privatization of public sector banks and the Banking Laws Amendment Bill, 2021, among others issues. Other central unions, including the Bank Employees Federation of India (BEFI) and All India Bank Officers' Association (AIBOA), have also joined the protest. The State Bank of India (SBI) has issued a similar notice and announced that its services may be disrupted on the given dates owing to the strike.
The Coordination Committee of Electricity Employees, Engineers & Pensioners (CCOEEEP), which is functioning as the Assam Chapter of the National Coordination Committee of Electricity Employees & Engineers (NCCOEEE), has also extended its support to the nationwide general strike called by power sector employees March 28 and March 29. According to office-bearers of CCOEEEP, barring those who will be engaged in emergency operations in the Power Department, all members of constituent trade unions will abstain from work on both days of the strike. Moreover, they will undertake demonstrations in all working places, including the Bijulee Bhawan here, from 10 am to 12 noon on both the days. However, in the greater public interest, employees engaged in emergency operations in power plants, control rooms, sub-stations, shift duty etc., have been exempted from the programme to ensure uninterrupted power supply, the sources said.
