Meghdoot Burglary: Main Suspect Held from West Saukuchi

According to a source, an amount of Rs 8,000 has been recovered from Saikia, while the efforts are on to trace the two other accomplices.

Guwahati: West Guwahati Police Department on Thursday nabbed the alleged main suspect of the Meghdoot Bhawan burglary.

Acting on a tip-off, the police nabbed the accused Dilip Saikia, son of late Til Bahadur Saikia from West Saukuchi.

During interrogation that he had two accomplices who waited outside the building while he looted the place.

According to a source, an amount of Rs 8,000 has been recovered from Saikia, while the efforts are on to trace the two other accomplices.

On the night of January 29, miscreants robbed the Meghdoot Bhawan (Guwahati GPO), which is located at a stone's throw from the offices of the Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup (M) and the Commissioner of Police, Guwahati, and decamped with cash worth around Rs 3 lakh.

According to Police sources, the incident came to light when the officials of Meghdoot Bhawan visited the office this morning. It was found that the thieves had entered and ransacked the first floor up to the fifth floor of the building.

A case (No. 31/22 u/s 457/380 IPC) was registered at Panbazar police station in this connection.

Notably, at least 16 persons were detained for questioning in this connection, including eight home guards.
