Despite of Cracking Down on Drug Peddlers, Hazard of Drugs Continues to Grip Guwahati City

Despite the Assam Police cracking down on drug peddling in the State, narcotics continue to be seized from various corners of the city.

GUWAHATI: Hazard of Drugs in Guwahati City: Despite the Assam Police cracking down on drug peddling in the State, narcotics continue to be seized from various corners of the city. In the last few days, the police have intensified their operations to tackle this menace. However, the drug problem continues to shackle the youths of the city.

In a joint operation by the Crime Branch and Bharalumukh Police on Monday, as many as 6 grams of suspected drugs were seized from a peddler — Jeherul Islam (50) from the Bhootnath area here. Islam, a resident of Goroimari, kept the suspected drugs in 10 vials and the team also recovered Rs 4,500 from his possession. In another operation, the team arrested a notorious drug peddler named Reena Begum from Railway Gate No. 6 under Bharalumukh Police Station with 11 grams of drugs.

Begum has been engaging in drug peddling for a long time and earlier was arrested by the police on December 27, 2020.

Later in the day, during an operation by Crime Branch and Fancy Bazar Outpost Police, a drug peddler — Sruti Bhanu was arrested from Railway Gate no. 3 with 10 grams of suspected drugs. The police also seized Rs 65,000 cash from her possession. Appreciating the work of the Assam Police to neutralize the menace of drugs, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted, "Good work by Assam Police to address the menace of narcotics."

In his tweet, Sarma stated that 469.7 grams of heroin, 574.31 kg ganja, 1499 tablets, and Rs 20,700 were recovered by the police on May 30. Moreover, 35 arrested were made and 20 cases were registered, Sarma added.
