Michael Deka Phukon is the new ULFA (I) deputy commander-in-chief

Michael Deka Phukan is appointed in place of former deputy C-in-C Drishti Rajkhowa, who surrendered on Wednesday

Guwahati: The new deputy commander-in-chief of United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) is Michael Deka Phukan alias Michael Axom. He has been appointed as the outfit's deputy C-in-C after the former deputy C-in-C Drishti Rajkhowa surrendered. It was announced by ULFA (I) on Friday.

Rajkhowa, originally Manoj Rabha surrendered on Wednesday afternoon after being cornered in a gun battle with police and commandoes. Police cornered him after the gun battle near the Bolbogkre village in the South Garo Hills with a team from SF-10 commandoes.

Known to be a close confidant of the C-in-C of ULFA (I) Paresh Baruah, Rajkhowa belonged to ULFA's 709 battalions and was operating in western Assam and Meghalaya. He was made the Deputy C-in-C of ULFA (I) in November 2011.
