Missing woman case: Doctor held in Guwahati

An investigation into a missing woman report led to the arrest of a doctor who was wanted in a kidney racket case from Hatigaon area of the city on Friday.

GUWAHATI: An investigation into a missing woman report led to the arrest of a doctor who was wanted in a kidney racket case from Hatigaon area of the city on Friday. The accused had assumed the fake identity of Dr Richard Abhraham Lowrence was working in a private hospital in the city.

The accused doctor's name had cropped up during police investigation in the missing woman's case. She is a resident of Assam. Following his arrest, it came to light that he was the same person wanted by the Dehradun Police in connection with a notorious kidney racket. A case (no 4070/21) was registered against him at the Dispur Police Station. After he was produced before the CJM court, the Dehradun police took him under transit remand.

Police sources said that the accused doctor -- whose real name is Akshay Santosh Rawat -- has been on the run for the last four years. The Dehradun police registered a case against him in 2017. The case was on the charge of running a kidney racket.

The accused's father and uncle are also doctors. Incidentally, a case was registered against his father in Mumbai (also in connection with illegal transplantation of kidney) in 1998. A similar case was registered against his father in Delhi in 2005.

The arrested doctor is said to have several high-value properties in Maharastra and even abroad. The Uttarakhand police had earlier announced a reward of Rs 20,000 for providing information about the accused doctor, added Police source.
