Guwahati: A day after the arrest of Republic TV's Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami in Mumbai, Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the drug mafia has encouraged his arrest as he has been trying to expose corruption and the drug cartel well known in Maharashtra.

"The huge nexus of drug trade is going on in Maharashtra," Sarma said adding that the case of Arnab Goswami cannot be compared with that of Akhil Gogoi. The minister said that exposing corruption is different from that of burning tyres on streets.

"Arnab Goswami is a journalist. Akhil Gogoi is an activist. Arnab Goswami is exposing corruption, he is exposing drug mafia. How can we compare burning tyre with that of Arnab Goswami. There is no question of comparison between the two," Minister Sarma said.

Goswami was arrested by Mumbai Police on Wednesday morning for abetment to suicide in a case that dates back to 2018. The senior journalist has been remanded to 14 days judicial custody.
