GUWAHATI: Mystery shrouds the seizure of cash and other materials from the locker of Ramani Kalita, owner of Subham Lodge at Beltola. The situation has come to such a pass that Ramani Kalita lodged an FIR with the Guwahati Police Commissionerate. An SI has been placed under suspension in connection with the matter.

The storyline goes that on September 7, 2020 the police got an information that gambling was going on at Subham Lodge. The police rushed to the spot and seized cash from Ramani Kalita's locker and other gambling materials from the hotel. In the seizure list SI Bhaskar Jyoti Nath allegedly wrote that Rs 6.65 lakh and other gambling materials had been seized. On the contrary, Ramani Kalita claimed that Rs 21.50 lakh had been seized by the police from his locker. He also said that he had the cash by selling a plot of land at Kahilipara, and the amount was kept for the treatment of his wife. Kalita also produced papers relating to the selling the plot of land. The CCTV of the hotel campus also shows the police personnel going out with a bagful of cash, Kalita claimed.

Ramani Kalita lodged an FIR with Guwahati Police Commissionerate. The Commissioner of Police has ordered an inquiry into the matter. However, the Commissioner of Police, Guwahati issued an order placing the SI under suspension with immediate effect for his 'gross misconduct and dereliction of duty'. He has also been closed to ordinary reserve.
