New teacher recruitment policy for LP, UP schools of Assam

The Education department of Assam is mulling introduction of a new criteria for appointment of teachers in lower primary (LP) and upper primary (UP) schools in the State.

GUWAHATI: The Education department of Assam is mulling introduction of a new criteria for appointment of teachers in lower primary (LP) and upper primary (UP) schools in the State. According to education department sources, although the basic criteria have been worked out, a complete set of new rules is being finalized and it will be out soon.

Sources further said that the candidates have to be graduates and those who have passed the Teachers’ Eligibility Test (TET) will get priority while being appointed as teachers in the LP and UP schools. The new criteria stipulate that a percentage of marks obtained by the candidate in different examinations will be added to his or her marks. Thus, 80% of the marks obtained in TET, 10% in graduation, 5% in D.El. Ed, and 5% of the marks out of the total marks obtained in the HS exams will be added to arrive at the total marks of the candidate.

Departmental sources also informed that an advertisement for appointment to LP and UP teachers is scheduled to be released within the month of September itself. It is significant to note here that no separate examination will be held for appointment of LP, UP teachers.

In case of Science teachers, the candidate must have Mathematics as a subject at the degree level. If the candidate does not have Maths at the degree level, he or she must have scored at least 60% in Mathematics at the higher secondary level. Then, 10% of the marks obtained in Maths will be added to the candidate’s total score.

Education department sources also informed that the new criteria for appointment of lower primary and upper primary teachers had been earlier approved at a state cabinet meeting. The new set of rules for the appointment of LP-UP teachers are being worked out based on the decisions taken at that meeting. The decision to add 80% marks obtained in TET, 5% from HS, 10% from graduation, and 5% from D.El.Ed was taken at that cabinet meeting, the source added.

It was also decided at the cabinet meeting that no separate recruitment examination would be held for appointment of LP, UP teachers.

Another significant decision taken at the cabinet meeting was the approval of an amendment to be made in Rule 3, Schedule 1 of the Assam Elementary Education (Prov.) Rules, 1977, according to which, the number of selected candidates will be equal to the number of vacancies.
