GUWAHATI: Will the UPPL (United People's Party, Liberal) go solo or ally with any other party in the ensuing Assembly question? This is a million dollar question right now. As of now, the party has been maintaining a stoic silence on this issue even as the Assembly election in knocking at the door.
Talking to The Sentinel on Thursday, UPPL vice president Govinda Basumatary said, "We've just formed the BTC (Bodoland Territorial Council) with the allies. We've got little time to discuss anything on the Assembly election. As of date, we haven't discussed anything at the official level on the Assembly poll. However, we're going to discuss it shortly."
The BTR (Bodoland Territorial Region) has 12 LACs (Legislative Assembly Constituencies). In the last BTC poll, the UPPL had an understanding with the BJP, and after the poll results they formed the BTC. After the formation of the BTC, State Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma went on record saying that the BJP, the AGP and the UPPL would ally in the Assembly election.
According to sources, the UPPL has already started searching candidates for the Assembly election. Though no official discussion has been held as yet with the BJP on the Assembly election, it's going to hold such a meeting by February end or in the first week of March.
