GUWAHATI: The Sadou Asam Karmachari Parishad (SAKP) on Monday expressed deep concern over the Chief Minister’s statement describing government teachers as beneficiaries.

SAKP president Dwipen Sarma issued a press release on Monday, stating that the Chief Minister, while talking to reporters on the sidelines of a government function at Tezpur, had compared teachers to beneficiaries, which is totally unacceptable, the release said. “Teachers are praise-worthy persons. Each teacher burns like a candle to provide light to others. The position of teachers in our society is very high”, Dwipen Sarma said.

The teachers’ body went on to state that no employee or teacher can be termed a government beneficiary. “Every teacher and employee gets appointed on the strength of their merit, not any politician’s patronage. Such lowly statements will not benefit the education system of the state. Such a situation has arisen due to years of oppression on the public education system. Public humiliation of teachers, creating mistrust on teachers in society, and extinction of thousands of government schools in the name of amalgamation is likely to weaken the public education system. The SAKP believes that it is the responsibility and duty of every person to contribute towards the betterment of the state’s education system,” the release said.
