GUWAHATI: Noukalpi and Other Short Stories in Translation, a collection of short stories in translation published by Co-Text Publishers, Kotayam, Kerala, was released recently.

Edited by Anand Krishnamurthy, a research scholar at St. Teresa's College, the collection has 20 short stories, all written by women writers in their respective mother tongues. The collection also has a Bishnupriya Manipuri short story from Assam. Noukalpi, written by Sunanda Sinha and translated into English by Madhuri Sinha, has made its strong presence in the collection with the special focus it has received in the title. Assam has something to be proud of, let alone the Bishnupriya Manipuris. In Bishnupriya Manipuri, Noukalpi means midwife. The inclusion of stories by the likes of Alice Ekka, P. Kesavadev, Binapani Mohanty, Gauri Paul, Ashitha, Kamala Das, and other eminent writers from various tongues has made the collection a must read.
