GUWAHATI: The All Assam Bengali Youth Students Federation (AABYSF), which was divided into two factions under the leadership of Ajay Bhushan Sarkar and Mahananda Sarkar Dutta, on Sunday unified at a meeting held here and alleged that Bengali Hindus are being victimized on the pretext of NRC (National Register of Citizens) and 'D' (doubtful) voters.

Talking to The Sentinel, president of the newly-unified AABYSF, Mahananda Sarkar Dutta said that members of the Bengali Hindu community have submitted biometric data for Aadhar cards, but they have not been given the cards because their names are not included in the updated NRC. Consequently, he said, such people are being deprived of various benefits under both the Government and private sectors.

Dutta said that many members of the Hindu Bengali community were excluded from the updated NRC despite having valid proof of citizenship. Further, he said, many members of the Hindu Bengali community are being issued notices on a large scale by the Border Police in various districts to appear before the relevant Foreigners Tribunals (FTs) and prove their citizenship.

The AABYSF president mentioned that although the majority of students from the Hindu Bengali community are studying either in Assamese medium or private schools, some are still studying in Bengali medium government schools. These Bengali medium schools are in a deplorable condition, he said, and urged the State Government to improve the infrastructure therein as soon as possible.
